The illegal trade of exotic animals is a booming
activity, a trend for those with sufficient purchasing power in developed
countries, but also an activity linked to the lower social strata in developing
countries, where you can find the great majority of endangered species.
The trafficking of exotic animal is the third most
lucrative business in the black market after drugs and arms. This trade moves
over 6.4 billion euros a year worldwide. In Indonesia, one of the most
bio-diverse countries in the world, illegal trafficking and destruction of
animal habitat are the greatest threats to many species of wildlife.
The exotic animal trade is considered a means to provide
social prestige and power in society. However, its contribution to the
household economy in poor areas does seem significant at all.
Governors, members of the military and the police, and
big businessmen come to have their real private zoos. According to local laws,
keeping or in possession of protected species is illegal. However, for
influential people, laws seem to be beneath them.
